Brandy was the first rescue at Tecate Horse Rescue. When DJean informed Mike she was getting another horse, he agreed—and the rescue was born. Brandy, a draft (likely Belgian) and Quarter Horse mix, was saved from Bowie Auction with just 45 minutes to spare before being sent to Mexico for slaughter. On June 25, 2022, we met the transporter in Barstow, CA, to pick her up.

Upon arrival, Brandy was isolated from our four other horses for safety, earning her the name “Brandy” as the fifth horse. Shannon quickly noticed signs of strangles, and with homeopathic treatments, Brandy made a full recovery.

Now thriving in Tecate, Brandy has filled out beautifully and shares a pasture with Daisy and Gracie. She ties, loads, halters, leads, and works well in the round pen. Though too young to ride (about 1.5 years old), she takes a saddle and bridle with ease. Brandy has had a dental, stands calmly for the farrier, and is up to date on de-worming and vaccines. She continues to respond well to handling and training.
