UPDATE:  BB King has been adopted!.

This one-year-old Arab Cross (possibly Paso Fino) colt, named BB King, was purchased at the Bowie Texas Livestock Auction as an O'Dwyer "Last Chance" horse by another rescue. However, due to the extensive training he required, he was relinquished to our care. He arrived at our rescue along with three other horses we had just saved from the auction.

BB King appeared unhandled, so we began slowly building his trust. He arrived with an injured leg, a deep cut above his eye, and potential dental issues, though handling him initially was a challenge. Step by step, we worked on haltering and gentling him, knowing trust takes time, especially after experiencing starvation and uncertain handling in the past.

Progress Timeline:

  • September 29, 2022: Breakthrough! BB King allowed Shannon to halter him, and they went for a walk together.

  • October 2022: BB King now halters, leads, ties, loads, and picks up all four feet. He has had dental work and farrier care without issue. He is comfortable in the round pen, easily saddles and bridles, but has not been ridden as he is still a year too young.

BB King has gained the weight he needed and is now happily pastured with Prim and Benny, continuing to thrive and grow.
