Our story...
DJean is a longtime volunteer and animal rescuer. Mike first met her when she brought in a rescued Opossum to Imperial Beach Pet Hospital where he is part owner and the manager at the time.
DJean is an avid horse lover, as a youngster she would jump bareback on her pony in Spring Valley and ride to what is now known as Rancho San Diego by herself. A different time back then...
DJean and Mike married on 11/11/11 at Cabrillo Monument overlooking the Pacific Ocean.
Years later we decided to purchase property in Tecate, CA because it would be less expensive than living where they were and boarding horses in south San Diego. The land was purchased, the well dug (1,300 feet $$$) and permits applied for.
We brought our 3 horses, at the time, to the property and started building their home. The grandiose plan was a Paddock Paradise. While that plan has not yet come to be, we did give the horses about 6 acres to roam. DJean was told of a horse the owner was not comfortable with and so we got a fourth. Meg was very green and reacted to the slightest distraction. Shannon, with a lot of love and effort, has developed Meg into a horse that most could ride.
Coming home one day DJean notified Mike that she was getting another horse to which Mike replied OK. DJean had come across a "Last Call" list and while talking to her mother in TN, her mother stated "You have to save her!".
So, we ended up our first rescue from Bowie Auction, she was named Brandy because she was our "fifth" horse.
So, Tecate Horse Rescue was born.
