Uhana and her mom, Pele, were rescued from the lot at an auction north of Los Angeles by another rescue along with Apollo the mule.  Mike and DJ picked them up from an interim rescue ranch.  While California has laws about kill pen buying and selling, there are a lot of horses and equines that eventually end up in auctions in other states that are kill pen auctions.
Pele and Uhana were very emaciated.  We had to separate them because Uhana was bullying Pele so we put them in side by side pens.
